ABOUT THE ARTIST
Gemma O'Brien @mrseaves101
Gemma O’Brien is an internationally renowned designer and artist known for her bold graphics, illustrative lettering and murals. Her work has been commissioned by Apple, Nike, Google, and is held in the permanent collection of the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City. Outside her commercial design work, she explores language, nature and the human experience through her art practice.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
‘The Sun’ is Gemma’s dedication to our solar system's magnificent star: a reliable source of warmth and energy. Blending abstract patterns and illustrative text motifs, the walls, pillars, and surfaces of the gallery are bathed in swathes of bright colour.
Through arabesque swirls, gradients, and hidden text, the artist draws on the colour of acacia flowers, the movement of waves and the shapes of swimming eels, to capture the change of the season. Comprising what she describes as the brightest works from her archives, Gemma has collected a series of prints, and postcards which are displayed along with limited edition patterned gift wrap and stamps. These smaller works are for sale during the exhibition, and will contribute to raising money for four Art Aid charities; Bali Life Foundation, Batyr, Indigenous Literacy Foundation and Women's and Girls' Emergency Centre.
