ABOUT THE ARTIST
Ellie Hannon @ellie.hannon
Ellie Hannon is an Australian artist who works out of her studio in Newcastle, NSW. Traversing the fields of exhibition work, public art and community engagement projects in her practice, Ellie establishes a visual narrative that explores the themes of values and our relationship with our environments, researching and investigating how our interactions with the natural environment shape our personal and collective identities.
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This work explores the tension between the human desire to be immersed in and at-one with nature and our alienation from the natural world.
"The subject of this painting is a river crossing I came across on the outskirts of Queenstown Tasmania, where the King and Queen Rivers meet. A space where the natural world and human interests collide. The Queen River that runs through Queenstown is bright orange in colour and biologically dead due to the impacts of acid mine leakage. Contrary to this it meets up with the King River that is a place of green thriving beauty. In this work, I aim to draw in the viewer, if only for a moment, to sit beside me and gaze at this natural wonder, not as a mere spectacle, but a landscape whose fate is intimately bound up with our own."
