      ABOUT THE ARTIST

      Gabby Malpas @gabbymalpas

Gabby Malpas is a graduate of the Otago Art School, Dunedin NZ with a major in ceramics 1986. Gabby challenges the centuries-old tradition of Chinoiserie with her own narrative as a Chinese adoptee raised by white parents in NZ.

The resulting images are beautiful and delicate, but with stories that draw the viewer in for a closer look. This is a calculated contrast to the sometimes confronting messages within her work. A proud maximalist, Gabby currently resides in Sydney, Australia.

      ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I have been painting Sarah Ryan’s Hillandale Garden at Yetholme, NSW since 2010.  Every year, I make the roadtrip to sit in Sarah’s garden with her, catching up with our news, making plans for joint projects for the coming year and just enjoying her beautiful cottage garden. I have fond memories of cottage gardens, hedgerows and bluebell woods from the 5 years I lived in Berkshire, UK. My Sarah’s garden images are about joy. Especially the joy in those gentle friendships we nurture as we grow older. In 2020 and 2021, I wasn’t able to visit Hillandale due to Covid but over the years I have photographed the garden many times so drew on those references.

This image is part of a set of 2 available on Art Aid, they will match when placed side by side.

      HOW ART AID WORKS

Every month we will send Gabby a full breakdown of the $$ impact her artwork has made on the planet, pretty rad right?
