ABOUT THE ARTIST
Alex Lehours @alexlehours
Calling on references from virtually every major art movement of the twentieth century, twisting them through his own bold hand, and tossing them haphazardly onto his canvas to create a melee of captivating chaos, Alex Lehours approaches his art-making with a decidedly ‘more is more’ attitude. His CV is replete with big names including Armani Exchange, Facebook, Foot Locker, The National Gallery of Victoria, Converse, Platypus Shoes, Adobe, Disney, Marvel and BMG Music. Skilled in painting, illustration, mural work, graphic design and typography, Lehours has become an essential member of Australia’s stable of multi-disciplinary graphic artists.
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This piece is a subtle, satirical commentary on the toxic nature of our daily surroundings. Constantly bombarded with information and content that consumes our psyche, we are being dragged into a world of personal gain where the selfish notion of “look at me” has become so normal and accepted that there seems to be no way back. We create facades to hide the vulnerability that once made us real and push aside anything genuine for the fear of being left behind. I am guilty of falling into these same traps and it is at these times that I have to ask the question, do I try and keep up or do I get out of the way and shield myself and my family from the cascading tumble of all this uncertainty? Commodities, pandemics, conflict, war, sex, drugs, scandals, the need for excess and more. We live in a very scary and awkward time. It is during this time that I am overcome with a heavy nostalgic feel. I think back to my childhood where things made sense. Things were much simpler. Was I just young and naive or has the world really changed that much? Maybe both?
